Making a difference is the mission of the Grade 11F learners of Weston High School.
Learner Revando van Wyk says the class identified a great need among their peers and decided something needed to be done about it and started a project named Make a Difference.
“Some learners live in difficult circumstances and are in need of toiletries and food,” he explained.
Another need the class identified is sanitary pads for girls. “Some girls miss out on schooldays, because they do not have access to sanitary pads.”
Providing food parcels for the learners is also something the Make a Difference team wants to achieve, for many come to school on empty stomachs and have no lunch.
The Grade 11F class teacher Layla Orrie says having observed the passion and dedication of her learners since the started the project has been phenomenal. She said: “It speaks of their need to be part of something bigger and part of the solution. That in itself speaks volumes about how important it is to make this a success.”
The project’s aim is to bring some relief to learners who are struggling and to encourage young people to give back to their community.
Revando says the group would like to expand its Make a Difference project and register it as a non-profit organisation. “We want to achieve our goal to help our community and learners in different towns in the West Coast.” He added they cannot do it alone and need the help of those who are able to assist with sponsorships and donations. “Together we can make a difference,” Revando said.
