Hopefield High School’s matric class

For many young people on the West Coast an anxiety-ridden festive season of waiting for the results of the 2022 National Senior Certificate (NSC) matric exams had triumphant outcomes.

The Western Cape matric class of 2022 achieved a 81,4% pass, a slight increase from the 81,2% obtained in 2021. The West Coast achieved a 78,89% pass this year.

For many the NSC exams set a vital path to the future. Paul Haricombe, principal of Diazville High School in Saldanha, said he was proud of his learners.

“We are all very happy with the improvement in the quantity and quality of the results of 2022,” he said. “The matric class of 2022 showed that with commitment, sacrifices, perseverance and discipline everything is possible.” His school’s top performer achieved 79,1%, and 170 out of 201 learners passed. “This is the highest number of learners to pass matric in the history of the school. Seventy-five out of the 201 learners obtained a bachelor’s pass giving them access to university study. We are confident the class of 2023 will improve on the pass rate of 2022.”

Bartho Brittz, principal of Vredenburg High, was just as proud. “Most of the matrics achieved better results in the NSC exam, which reflected on their character, self-discipline and commitment to working hard to achieve their goals,” he said.

Brittz added the school strove to prepare its learners to be responsible adults contributing to their own community.

“We wish the matric class of 2022 all the best for the new chapter they are embarking on,” he said. “We are looking forward to seeing how they flourish in a future they are creating for themselves. For the matric class of 2023 we want to remind them that only the best satisfies.”
