Langebaan Animal Care (LAC) is on a mission.
Over the past two years it has had an influx of neglected and abandoned animals which it has to manage on a weekly basis. Currently the shelter is at maximum capacity.
Tracy Mistry of the shelter said it always tries to remain positive and never give up. “Let’s imagine a world where every abandoned animal finds their loving home, where animal shelters are not necessary anymore.
“Some countries have achieved this. Did you know one of the most effective factors of this outcome is sterilisation?” she asks.
What can we all do? Can we help to make a change?
For the past five years the Saldanha Bay Municipality had not included LAC in compulsory sterilisation.
Mistry said it fought for this to be changed, with help from the public and certain individuals. “We feel we are moving in the right direction at last!” she said. “Sterilisation of all pets is now compulsory. Pet owners must be made responsible.”
She believes communication and education are key. “We need to spread the news far and wide in the best interests of all the animals. Tell your animal loving friends to put posters up, get on social media and the radio. Whatever it takes can be done together.”
LAC runs a successful sponsor a Spay Today campaign that is ongoing.
It invites everyone to donate R1 200 for one month, or as many months as they wish, to cover the costs of two sterilisations. The shelter managed to assist with 540 sterilisations last year.
