The police on the West Coast are busy with two inquests after a toddler and an elderly man burned to death in shacks in two separate cases in two separate towns.

In Saldanha, a 4-year-old girl burned to death on Friday morning, September 6, when a fire broke out in a shack in Marikana next to Diazville at around 07:45, presumably when a paraffin heater caught fire.

According to Capt Tania Helfrich, West Coast police spokesperson, her mother was not in the shack when the fire started.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

The child’s name has not yet been released to the media.

Later the same day, Gert Engelbrecht (60) was found lifeless in Citrusdal after his shack burned down in Riverview.

Both cases are under investigation.
