The board of Transnet recently appointment of Portia Derby as the new Transnet Group Chief Executive.

Derby took the reins at the beginning of February after a “rigorous and extensive search.”

With a long history of service in both the public and private sector, Derby served as the Director General of the Department of Public Enterprises from 2005 to 2009.

She acted as Chief Operating Officer of the Department of Trade and Industry and has served on various boards, including the Board of Metair Investment and Safcol. She holds an honours degree in Economics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and an MBA from the University of the Witwatersrand.

“The board believes Portia brings the insights, experience and competence to lead Transnet,” Dr Popo Molefe, Transnet Chairperson, said in a statement. “We wish to thank Mohammed Mahomedy, who has been the Acting Group Chief Executive since May 2019. Mohammed has served Transnet with distinction, and the Board acknowledges the contribution he has made to the organisation.

“Mohammed has been asked to return to the position of Acting Chief Financial Officer and Mark Greg-MacDonald will serve as Acting Group Treasurer.

“Derby’s appointment brings certainty to Transnet. It will announce appointments of other executives shortly. Portia will play a key role in leading the revival of Transnet.”
