  1. Plan the layout of your garden by grouping plants with similar watering needs. This will prevent over-watering of drought-tolerant plants like succulents, but you will still be able to provide the correct amount of water to thirstier plants, which should make up the smaller section of your garden.
  2. Choose plants that are indigenous to the area; these plants have adapted to the climate and can sustain themselves without much intervention.
  3. Add lots of compost to the soil, this helps with water retention and increases the nutrient value.
  4. Water your garden early in the morning or in the late afternoon to reduce evaporation.
  5. Use mulch like bark or dried leaves in between your plants to help with water retention and to minimize the number of weeds.
  6. Reduce wind and sun damage by planting fast growing trees or shrubs in and around your garden.

Water-wise gardens are low-maintenance, colourful, textured and full of life. Whether you are an old hat at gardening or a newbie, there are few things in life that give as much pleasure as looking after your own little piece of nature, so start today. It’s so easy.
