It’s that time of the year again as the second West Coast Street Mile Series is hosted by Langebaan Athletics Club (LAC) on Saturday 24 August. Starting point is at the Seabreeze Hall in Langbaan.
According to Christopher Rodgers, race director last year’s event was a success as it was a first of its kind locally. “Schools and clubs supported the event,” he said, “and we are hopeful that it will happen again, this time with more clubs and schools.”
Rodgers sees this event as a great opportunity for locals from the West Coast to take part in their own area.
This year the event incorporates the 5 km Boland trails, this will then also determine the Boland Athletics South Africa team.
Age group categories range from 8 years old to seniors and masters up to 70+. With all clubs and schools welcome to take part, participants can look forward to prize money up to R57 000. The school with the most entries will receive R4 000, the club with the most entries (excluding the host LAC) will receive R4 000 and the best athletics club will walk away with a trophy and bragging rights. There will also be incentives for those who better their records.
The second league will take place on Saturday 14 September starting at Langebaan Town Hall. All participants will also receive medals at the grand finale which will take place on Saturday 21 September starting at Seabreeze Hall again.
Rodgers said the purpose of this event is to promote athletics within communities and also the developing of the youth. He looks forward to seeing everyone at the Street Mile Series this year.
