Learners of Louwville High and employees from the Transnet National Port’s Authority joined forces to clean up the beach within the Saldanha Port, as part of International Coastal Clean-up Day.
The team came together on Saturday 15 September to “harness the power of people in fighting ocean trash”, as activist organisation Ocean Conservancy puts it.
“Today, plastic has been found in 62% of all seabirds and 100% of sea turtle species,” the organisation says. It says citizen science data collected over the last 31 years offers some insight into the manner in which one should tackle this enormous and growing problem.
Malithatwe Nombewu, Customer Relations and Corporate Affairs Officer at the Port of Saldanha, said the port appreciated the efforts of the learners and employees toward cleaning up the local beach.
