It was a day of fun, connection and information as the elderly of Silvertree embarked on an excursion to the West Coast National Park on Thursday 22 August.

They had the privilege to host a few seniors from the Northern Cape along with them. Clubs included Ubuntu Abantu, Vlytige Bejaardes, Khani Kla, Reenbook and Skitterende Seniors.

The seniors arrived very excited at the Langebaan Thusong, where they had the opportunity to meet one another, enjoyed tea and coffee and discussed the programme for the day.

The purpose of the integrated and crossover visit was to network and share successes stories and challenges that they experience daily. The focus of the visit was to for the seniors to experience the West Coast and the Park. Esmerelda Mckay from Government Communication Information System West Coast said for some seniors it was their first time in the West Coast. “It made the trip very emotional. In 30 years of democracy it is possible for seniors to move freely between provinces. The seniors connected with one another, shared stories and took pictures, seeing the moment as historic for all. It’s the first time we had such an educational network session with seniors from the Northern Cape.”

At the West Coast National Park the seniors visited various points with its staffer Buntu Madikane, who shared informative information.

The day ended back at the Langebaan Thusong with exchanging of gifts among the clubs.

Communities without Borders were thankful to the anonymous sponsor, Nautica SPAR and TOPS who prepared the lovely meal to the elderly. They also wanted to thank photographer Julian Tsepo and the Saffodien family for always providing transport. Carmen Rodgers of Communities without Borders called the day a sign of remarkable unity and power. “Let’s keep supporting one another to bring positive change in our communities. Let’s appreciate our elderly more than ever. They are our true gems of this earth.”
