With the Global Fishing Watch, an online tool, anyone with an internet connection can monitor fishing activity anywhere in the world’s oceans in almost real-time.

It was launched in September in America.

It uses satellite technology and boats’ radar to trace the paths of 35 000 commercial fishing vessels. Data is now available to the general public, journalists, researchers and others who may act as watchdogs in ensuring world fisheries are sustainably managed.

It will harness the power of citizen engagement and provide a powerful tool to show consumers where and by whom fish are being caught. To use the free tool, watch the tutorial on Globalfishingwatch.org.
