Sea Harvest’s men’s and women’s firefighting teams stole the show at the International Firefighter’s Day competition hosted by the Cape Winelands District Municipality in Stellenbosch on Thursday 4 May.
Both teams outperformed their counterparts, clocking the fastest time for completion of an obstacle course.
Sea Harvest Head of Engineering and Safety, Health and Environment (SHE), Cliffton Rajgopaul, said: “We are extremely proud of every member of our firefighting teams, including those who were not able to participate in the event.
“They have demonstrated incredible skill and discipline, not only at the competition, but also during their training and, in that, they have brought honour to Sea Harvest and elevated our brand.
“As a company we strive for excellence in everything we do and our firefighters are among the teams who are leading the way in embracing our desired corporate culture and living the Sea Harvest brand.”
Ten of the top firefighting teams across the Western Cape participated in the International Firefighter’s Day competition.
The teams had to complete various activities in the perfect opportunity to showcase their skills.
The Sea Harvest men’s team recorded a time of six minutes and 24 seconds, the fastest time on the day, while the women’s team won their category and outscored three professional men’s teams.
Rajgopaul added congratulations were also due to the Sea Harvest firefighting team leaders, Grantley de Villiers and Edwado Carstens, for their leadership and tireless efforts outside competition days.
Carstens said it was an honour to represent Sea Harvest against professional fire brigades.
“It was something big to compete against professionals,” he said. “We do the small things great, which is why we train two times per week. Our motto is ‘One team, one dream’, and that is to become the best firefighting team in South Africa.
“In the last Marsh Risk Group (MRG) Firefighting Competition held in Johannesburg in 2020 we ranked third, meaning we were the best firefighting team in the whole of South Africa.
“Later this year, in October, we will participate in the Western Cape MRG Firefighting Competition and, if we make it into the Top 5, we will go to the nationals in March 2024.”
