The West Coast Prestige Schools Chess tournament, held on Saturday 15 March at the Cedarberg Academy in Citrusdal, showcased exceptional young talent across multiple age divisions.
Among the standouts were four promising players from Genesis Chess Club in
Vredenburg, each making their mark in different categories.
In the u-19 division, Indiphile Limani from Louwville High School claimed joint 1st place, demonstrating remarkable skill and composure against the tournament’s most seasoned compe-
titors. Limani’s performance has established them as one of the region’s top young chess talents.
Chloe Mitchels from Vredenburg High School secured 3rd place in the u-15 category, impressing observers with her tactical prowess and resilience throughout the competition. Her strategic approach to difficult positions proved decisive in several crucial matches.
The u-17 division saw Shaundre Lewaks from Hopefield High School earn joint 3rd place after a series of challenging games. Lewaks displayed exceptional problem-solving abilities and creative play that caught the attention of many attending coaches.
Completing Genesis Chess Club’s impressive showing was Maxlin-Lee Kotze, from Eden Primary School who captured 3rd place in the u-13 section. Despite being one of the youngest competitors from the club, Kotze demonstrated maturity and strategic thinking beyond their years.
“These results across different age categories speak volumes about the development programme at Genesis Chess Club,” noted tournament director Hendrik van Rooyen. “To have competitive players at every level is no small achievement.”
The success of these players promises an exciting future for chess in the Western Cape region. Their determination and strategic brilliance ensure they will be names to watch in South African chess for years to come.
