Rugby prodigy off to Dubai

An opportunity of a lifetime has come onto the path of Ziyaad Ahmed.

An opportunity of a lifetime has come onto the path of Ziyaad Ahmed.

The 15-year-old Curro Langebaan learner has been scouted and selected to be part of a rugby team that will participate in the Beal Rugby Tournament in Dubai in December.

But to make this a reality Ziyaad still needs a total of R35 000, to cover flights, visa, accommodation and more by the end of October.

He was scouted at a rugby match, which took place earlier this year. When his coach first broke the news to him Ziyaad said he was very happy.

“I thought there was no possible way I was selected to go and play in Dubai; different thoughts were rushing through my mind; I mean, the mere idea of it. What could I possibly have done to catch their attention? Why would they have chosen me?”

He sees this opportunity as a great privilege and was grateful to have been chosen. “It feels like a reward for all the hard work and effort I have put into the game, and I feel proud, and this opportunity feels like one of my first big accomplishments with the game.”

Ziyaad’s parents, Kauthar and Shafiek Ahmed, told Weslander they were very proud of their son. “As parents all we want is what is best for our kids, and Ziyaad makes it even more so with the effort and love he puts into the game. We believe his going on this trip will only fuel his passion and boost his confidence even more, especially the belief that one day he will make it to the national team. It will be an invaluable experience that will open his mind even more to the endless opportunities of his dreams.”

His rugby coach, Steyn van Loggerenberg, said Ziyaad is a very talented player with many ball skills, good hands, good running and not being afraid to commit to a situation.

“He is also a very passionate player and approaches each game with the necessary positive attitude. In his team, as captain he would always bring the energy that is needed before a match. He would be positive and motivate the other team mates to give their best. He showed a lot of leadership qualities, and I wish him the best.”

Not only is Ziyaad a talented rugby player, but also a member of Langebaan Strandlopers athletics club. One of his coaches, Clive Cupido, said of Ziyaad that he is very disciplined, respectful and eager to learn.

“He is talented and is always exploring new avenues to better his physical condition. Ziyaad always has a positive outlook on life and is a complete optimist. To me his strongest characteristic would be his commutation skills and honesty.”

The prodigy said his big dream is to play for the big leagues, especially the Springboks, one day.

“Not only would I represent my country, but I hope I will inspire many boys to chase and work hard to achieve their dreams and not give up on what they love, as anything is possible with God. And if they have the right mentality and commitment achieving their dreams becomes inevitable.
