Reduction in Easter road fatalities; one fatal accident on West Coast roads

During Easter weekend, 22 fatalities were reported on Western Cape roads, reflecting a decline from last year’s 26 deaths.

Traffic cops from the Saldanha Bay Traffic Department are ready to serve.

During the Easter weekend all officials were out in full force making their presence known on the roads of the West Coast.

On Saturday 19 April the West Coast saw one fatal collision on the R27 between Yzerfontein and Langebaan, involving a light motor vehicle and a petrol tanker. Sergeant Wesley Twigg, provincial police spokesperson, said a 43-year-old male was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel, while the driver of the truck received treatment for minor injuries. “The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. Langebaan police registered a culpable homicide case.”

Motorists had to be patient as both lanes were closed at one point due to safety reasons.

At the start of the Easter weekend, the Saldanha Bay Safety Initiative (SBSI) activated an integrated Easter roadblock initiative on Thursday 17 April at two spots, including the R45 field road and the R27 along the Engen West Coast 1 Stop, showing high visibility. It is reported that between Thursday 17 and Monday 21 April, a total of 22 fatal crashes were recorded in the Western Cape, resulting in 22 lives lost.

This marks a decline compared with the 26 road-related fatalities reported over the 2024 Easter period.

Muneera Allie, head of communication for the Western Cape Mobility Department, said they extend their deepest condolences to the families and loved ones who lost someone on the roads during the weekend.

“While it is encouraging to see a reduction in road fatalities this Easter compared to last year, we must not lose sight of the fact that every life lost is one too many.

“All road users are reminded that safety is a shared responsibility. Please obey road rules, avoid reckless behaviour, and ensure that you are fit to drive, not tired or under the influence.”

Motorists are urged to practice caution on the roads as another long weekend approaches.
