“Recycling is not something you do for someone else, it’s about creating a future for yourself and your children. If the environment goes, then there is no future for any of us.”
Jacques Adams, owner of Piketberg Civil CC, a Piketberg recycling company that employs 14 people, who strongly believes in the value of recycling, goes on to say: “I want the government to start advertising on TV about why it’s important to recycle.”
His company is contracted to the Bergriver Municipality to collect and separate household recyclables in Piketberg.
“We collect the recyclables from the whole town on a Tuesday and a Thursday,” he explains, which he sells to the local scrapyard.
The company has a baling machine, but cannot yet afford a forklift, which is hampering the business’ growth.
Although Adams is very passionate about recycling, he finds it challenging to motivate others to also start recycling.
The business was established in 2004 by Adams and his father, who worked with him for eight years.
Piketberg Civils’ future plans include getting all the farmers on board.
“We are surrounded by farms, but only two or three of them are currently recycling. The others bury or burn their refuse. Getting all the farms to recycle is a goal I want to achieve,” Adams said.
