During October the Cape West Coast Biosphere hosted a recycling competition for primary schools in Saldanha Bay and Vredenburg.
The Cape West Coast Biosphere (CWCBR) Saldanha Office is funded by Afrisam’s corporate social responsibility division to conduct environmental education in the Greater Saldanha Bay.
The Biosphere hosted the competition to spread awareness of the importance of recycling as a lifestyle and how the children can make their own money from waste. In the individual competition learners were asked to create a sculpture of a moon vehicle from recyclable material and/or create a painting from recyclable material. Schools were also challenged to collect recyclable material for one month and sell the material to Vredenburg Recyclers.
The awards ceremony took place on 24 October at the Weskus School in Saldanha. The guest speaker was Corrie Windt from the Darling Recycling Swop Shop, and the Diazville High School Eco-Club hosted a fashion show, showcasing clothes made from recyclable material.
Panorama Primary achieved first place, collecting the most recyclable material.
The CWCBR said the competition and awards were successful overall and it was looking forward to more such competitions and events.
