Plans for a new phosphate ore and limestone mine between Vredenburg and Saldanha are under way.
Residents will have the opportunity to comment on the plans on Tuesday 30 August at a public meeting to be held at the Skilpad community hall at Vredenburg’s sports ground.
Johannesburg-based mining company Adelaide Ruiters Mining and Exploration (A.R.M.E) is applying for prospecting rights on a 391-hectare area, part of the farm Yzervarkensrug 127.
It is next to Lafarge, about 4,5 km south of Vredenburg and 6,5 km north of Saldanha.
This is one of a number of applications for prospecting rights by Ruiters, who has also applied for rights on the adjoining farm Zandheuwel.
This application involves five borehole shafts to be drilled to determine the ore body in the region and to collect a bulk sample for metallurgical tests.
Interested parties looking to comment or raise concerns can attend the meeting between 10:00 and 14:00 or submit their comments to the environmental consultant, Kamogelo Mokhine from DMT-Kai Batla, no later than 10 September.
