Air Force Base Langebaanweg led an outreach programme at Noordhoek Primary school in Velddrif on Friday 16 October.
This was initiated by the Environmental Services Section. The project was managed and run by Captain Gramville Petro Kuilders, Warrant Officer Micheal Fred Pedro and Flight Sergeant Shefton Andell Maarman (Environmental Services Air Force Base Langebaanweg).
The aim was to plant trees around the sports facilities at the school, situated in Noordhoek, Velddrif to create awareness of the importance of trees.
These trees were planted to beautify the surrounding areas at the school. The theme for the project was “Forest and Biodiversity” and the slogan was “Trees in our lives”
Eight indigenous trees were planted during the ceremony, which were presented by a few Grade 6 learners who gave an overview of each tree.
The tree of the year (Ekebergia capensis, Cape ash/Essenhout)) was planted by the principal, Mervyn Ruiter, and teacher Dené Loubser, the mastermind behind the tree planting project.
Darryl Dreyer of the West Coast Fossil Park was invited as guest speaker to speak to the learners about the importance and the role trees play in our lives and how we can make a difference in the sustainability of our environment.
The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries made an occasion for fostering awareness of the importance of trees possible.
