A new president for the Malgas Lions Club has been inaugurated.

Shane Poole, a resident of Saldanha Bay, has been elected the new president of the club for the term 2024-’25. The inauguration took place on Thursday 15 August in Saldanha.

A Lion for about 11 years he has been part of the Malgas Lions Club for the past three and has served as the treasurer for two years.

On being elected president Poole said he was both scared and elated at the same time.

With the club being 63 years old and one of the oldest in the country, he felt a great sense of responsibility for its future and growth.

“In my term as president I would love to get back to service. Lions of Malgas have gone through some difficult times since Covid, numbers have dwindled and the call to service has been a hard one to answer. I would like to see the club back at full strength doing what we do best – serving our communities. Malgas has one of the largest communities we have to service, from Yzerfontein, Langebaan Saldanha, Vredenburg to Hopefield, Velddrif and St Helena Bay. And I would love to service them all with as many people as possible.”

Being part of the Malgas Lions Club taught Poole that even though it may be small it has the ability to spark change by propelling others forward and by acting as an anchor and foundation for those projects of service.

“As Lions our root in service and the nature of Lions supporting our communities first and our Lions as a whole district second, makes us an effective force for change.

“With 207 members in our district and 9 000 projects taken on to completion for the year 2022-’23, we are a service organisation first and a fundraising organisation last. We are proud to serve as Lions.
