The pupils of HP Williams Primary School in St Helena Bay are off to a flying start in 2017.
For the first time since opening in 1962, the school now has its very own school bus, courtesy of the Oceana Group.
“Having our own transport gives our school a welcome sense of independence and is a point of pride for our pupils, teachers and local community,” says school principal Leonard Erasmus. He added the school was grateful to the fishing company for this much needed donation.
Many children at the school have parents working in one of Oceana’s lobster and pilchard processing plants or its cannery in St Helena Bay.
“The bus is a great gift for our school,” said head boy Isidor Erasmus. “We can now be much more independent, because previously we always had to rely on taxis for transport. Now we have our own transport, the best part is that we can save money and the school can now develop.”
He said HP Williams Primary works sparingly with money, so donations received are really appreciated.
“Therefore, we as a school want to thank Oceana for the great gift. We really appreciate it and can assure you that we can and will have many uses for the bus,” Erasmus added
The fishing company also handed out back-to-school starter packs for all Grade 1 pupils.
