Last week Middelpos Primary School in Saldanha reached another significant milestone in its short but flourishing history, when it opened its doors to Grade 4 to 7 learners for the first time.
The school opened for the first time in 2017, after parents of the Middelpos community fought for many years for a school of their own, where their children could be educated in their home language, isiXhosa.
Last year, the school could accommodate learners only in foundation-phase grades, but this year the school became a fully fledged primary school.
The Grade 4 to 7 isiXhosa classes, which were taught at Diazville Primary, officially moved to their new school in Middelpos last week.
Avril Daniels, manager of the Vredenburg regional office of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), says Diazville Primary will return to being an Afrikaans-medium school.
According to Daniels, both schools are full.
Nosithembele Mazula, a teacher at Middelpos told Weslander on Tuesday morning that more than 30 prospective Grade R learners whom they were not able to accommodate in their already full classrooms as well as their parents were still waiting in hopes in the school hall at that very minute.
Daniels said the WCED will look at the numbers after the cut off date on 29 January to determine if the school needs more teachers and other staff.
The school still has no feeding scheme and many of the children come from needy homes and have to learn on empty stomachs.
Mazula asks interested local companies to support a worthy cause by helping Middelpos Primary to set up a feeding scheme of their own to provide healthy daily meal to the learners.
The school thanks all their generous sponsors who have helped since the start of the school last year.
“Duferco deserves a special vote of thanks,” Mazula added.
