Matric learners in the Western Cape have started their final matric exam today.
The combined June and November exams will be ongoing for six weeks until Tuesday 15 December.
According to Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schäfer, nearly 100 000 candidates will write their NSC exams in the Western Cape this month. A much larger group than would ordinarily write during the November session. “A total of 95 427 will write this month, compared to 64 465 for the same session last year,” she said.
Shäfer said the subject with the largest number of candidates writing is Mathematical Literacy, which will be written on Thursday 12 November (Paper 1) and on Tuesday 16 November (Paper 2), by 56 754 candidates.
According to Bronagh Hammond, spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), the department has prepared examination centres to ensure all the necessary screening protocols and health and safety measures are in place.
“Given the large number of learners writing Mathematics, Mathematics Literacy, English Home Language and English First Additional Language, changes had to be made to accommodate social distancing.”
Hammond adds that the English First Additional Language paper is written in the morning session and the English Home Language paper in the afternoon session.
She said learners had already written Life Orientation on Monday 19 October.”
The main marking period will be between Tuesday 5 January 2021 and Thursday 21 January 2021. The national minister is expected to announce the results on 22 February 2021.
