On Saturday 26 February, four Grade 4 learners from Masiphatisane Primary School in Vredenburg participated in a first-of-its-kind Grade 4 isiXhosa spelling competition at the Protea Hotel in Stellenbosch.

Principal René Joorst said the aim of the programme was to promote and create opportunities to celebrate the mother tongue in South Africa, and this was an incredible milestone, “especially for our indigenous languages which include isiXhosa.

“The learners gave an excellent performance, one we as the Masiphathisane Primary School family can be incredibly proud of. It was a great honour and privilege to see one of our learners placed in the top 10.

They would like to thank teachers Sizakele Khiba, Zandi Sizaniand Thandazile Maqubela for accompanying the learners to the event as well as every colleague who lent a helping hand in various ways so our learners could successfully participate in the event. “We are incredibly grateful,” Joorst said on behalf of her learners.
