The Hawks have confirmed that a 52 year old man was arrested on 23 May for alleged numerous accounts of fraud amounting to millions of rand.

The man apparently falsely under declared the quantities of fish caught by fishing entities that he was affiliated to. He then made profit from the concealed loot said capt. Lloyd Ramovha, spokesperson for the Hawks.

Amongst the fishing entities are listed the now defunct Yellow Star Trading 1004 Pty (Ltd), Sandy Point Fishing Pty (Ltd) and Kalahari Fishing. The latter two are confirmed to be from St Helena Bay.

It is alleged that he in this manner defrauded the Western Cape Department of Marine and Coastal Management since 2002. The department reportedly suffered losses amounting to more than R8 million.

The original case of fraud was made at St Helena Bay police in 2009.

The man is due to appear in the Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court on 6 June.
