Placement of learners at schools in the Western Cape was one of the first challenges the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) faced.
Avril Daniels, WCED Circuit Manager in Vredenburg, says although learners have been placed, the number of placements on the West Coast has been fluctuating. He says this has also become a challenge due to late applications and a large number still being received.
“Most English learners in Grade 8, Grade 9 and Grade 1 still have to be placed in schools,” Daniels said.
Another group in the circuit facing challenges is the isiXhosa group at Louwville High School.
Bronagh Hammond, a spokesperson for the WCED, says since the start of the school year in February, 13 teachers have tested positive for Covid-19 on the West Coast as well as 13 learners.
Daniels, however, wants to assure parents that the WCED is finding solutions for these issues, although “placement has been more difficult this year than before.”
