Excitement, splashing water, and the cheering of parents filled the air as four local swim schools came together on Saturday 1 November at Curro Langebaan to host yet another successful swimming gala.

This was the fourth year that learners from Lido Swemskool, Swim with Katharina, The Swim Academy, and Melissa’s School of Swimming had the opportunity to participate in the annual “Learn to Swim” fun gala. This initiative was started by Katharina Paul, who wanted to organise an event for children still learning the art of swimming.

The gala aimed to build confidence, celebrate progress, and encourage further growth as swimmers. It also strengthens the connection between swimmers from different schools who might one day, in the future, take part in more competitive club galas.

The gala consisted of two groups. The first group, known as the “Lollipop Race,” consisted of swimmers aged 3-8 years. They swam in the shallow part of the pool and were accompanied by volunteers. Kickboards and pool noodles were part of the excitement in this race and gave extra comfort. After the race, each swimmer received a participation medal and a sweets pack.

The second group consisted of swimmers between the ages of 5 to 15 years. They took part in five different events, which took place in the “deep lanes” with the first three winners of each race receiving medals.
Enthusiastic students from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) assisted with everything from timekeeping to helping swimmers out of the water. Their positive energy was uplifting throughout the day.

The Learn to Swim team thanks all the volunteers for their hard work, and Natalia Louw, who is always on board. A special thank you to all the sponsors who made this day even more memorable for the swimmers.

The team wishes to thank the parents for entrusting them with their children, for trusting the process, and for cheering on every milestone.

“Behind every swimmer stands a parent who loves, encourages and believes in them.”
