Structure fires wreaked havoc in George Kerridge, Vredenburg, on Tuesday 21 October.

That people were clearly affected by the extent of the devastation was plain to see when Weslander arrived on the scene.

According to those who were there the homeowners were not in the vicinity and the fire, the cause of which was not yet confirmed, spread very quickly.

Tereza Burger, spokesperson for the Saldanha Bay Municipality, said five informal structures and one vehicle were destroyed, while another vehicle was severely damaged in the fire. She said its cause could not be established by the firefighting crew on the scene.

“The emergency call was received at 08:24 and crews arrived at 08:34. The incident was concluded at 10:53. Approximately 17 000 litres of water were used in the fire-suppression activities. The municipal water truck was also activated to ensure a continuous water supply for firefighters. The number of people affected could not be verified on the scene due to owners/occupiers not being there.

“The Saldanha Bay Municipality’s Disaster Risk Management section is providing affected people with necessary humanitarian assistance,” Burger pointed out.
