After competing in the 2023 DanceStar competition in Cape Town last year, an opportunity of a lifetime opened for Vredenburg dancers Rohnge Fortune and Claudine Booysen.
They have received the opportunity to represent South Africa at the World Dance Masters in Croatia during May this year. For Fortune this is a huge opportunity as it will allow them to gain experience while representing the country.
Booysen said she is very excited about the chance to compete in Croatia. “It is a privilege to represent my country and I will be forever grateful for this wonderful opportunity.”
Fortune has been a dancer for more than 20 years, with ballet her first introduction to the dance world at the age of 4. She, however, made the transition to Hip-Hop after she had started developing a passion for the expressiveness and freedom the dance genre gives.
After completing her studies at Waterfront Theatre School, Fortune made her way to Vredenburg and decided to share all she learnt by opening the West Coast Hip-Hop Studio in 2023.
Currently, with 30 students signed-up with the studio who aspire to be professional dancers or instructors, Fortune sees all competition as a learning curve, and believes the trip to Croatia will be just as beneficial.
Both dancers have to cover costs for accommodation and flights to make this dream come true.
Fortune said bookings need to be made by March and would really appreciate help from the West Coast.
