Porterville High School has worked towards recycling water at the school over the last few months.

Last September, Kainos Projects Africa was appointed to design and implement a water recycling system to capture grey water from the school and hostel. The system was upgraded to a central plant were the water is made irrigation quality.

The school strives to be at the forefront of conservation efforts, and the new system, installed in January, clearly sets them on this road.

The system is operated as a SBR bioreactor, and is designed to recover up to 15 000 F of grey water per day. The treated water will be used to irrigate new olive trees, as part of the school’s agricultural expansion.

The school thanked all the contractors and donors who made the project possible.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) congratulated the school for its “innovative and exciting water conservation project”.

In a statement this week,. the department also said it looked forward to tasting the harvested olives in future as well.
