Learning to drive is a useful life skill, but can be stressful for both old and new drivers. Weslander shares some tips for anyone trying to get their driver’s licence.

Where to start

To drive a vehicle would-be drivers must pass a learner’s test. To pass this test one needs to study and understand the rules of the road, road markings, road signs and the controls of a vehicle.

Use a K53 book to study all you need to know. If you don’t wish to buy the book, borrow one from a public library.

When you’re out and about, try to properly identify road markings and signs.

Don’t be afraid to ask a driver to explain a rule or road sign. Be sure to go over practise and mock tests that are available online.

You must also undergo an eye test in order to get your learner’s licence, which is valid for two years.

When you apply to write the test, you will need your official South African identity document, two ID-size black and white or colour photographs (35 mm x 45 mm) and the R68 application fee.

Visit www.getyourlearners.co.za/test for more.

Taking the test

Once you have submitted your form, you will be given a date for your test.

You can cancel this date only if you are sick (you’ll need to provide a medical certificate) or attending a funeral (you’ll need to provide a death certificate), or if you are writing exams (you’ll have to provide a timetable).

The payment won’t be refunded if you cancel your appointment.

If you’re not able to make your test, make sure to cancel it, as it causes a backlog in the appointment system.

You need to pay R33 for the learner’s licence once you have passed the test.

Taking to the road

Once you have passed the written test a driver with a learner’s licence can take to the road, but a licensed driver must accompany you at all times (except on a motorcycle).

A learner driver may not carry another person on a motorcycle. Remember you can only drive the type of vehicle your licence is valid for.

Keep your learner’s licence with you. Once you have your learner’s permit you can make an appointment to get your driver’s license.
