If you’re a registered business owner and need practical guidance on how to survive to get your business to the next level, there is a free two-day business course available in January if you are in the Weskus Nuus and Weslander distribution area.

The course takes place on the West Coast on 27 and 28 January at the ArcelorMittal Science Centre in Vredenburg.

The University of the Western Cape’s (UWC) Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) wants to inform as many registered small businesses of this opportunity to attend this free business course and start the new year on the right footing.

Charleen Duncan from the CEI says, “South Africa has one of the lowest start-up survival rates, with only 3% of start-ups surviving beyond the first three years – and one of the contributing factors is low business skills of business owners.

“With this course, we can already see the benefits of the programme in the way business owners’ mind sets are being changed and how skills learnt are being implemented in their respective businesses.”

The course is intensive and teaches strategy. It is run by UWC and sponsored by the Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT) and Western Cape Government and is part of the Emerging Business Support Programme.

It provides immediate and practical guidance to struggling businesses. Day one teaches self-assessment and the why and how of business strategy, financial planning and decision-making, while day two deals with marketing and sales planning and the operational aspect of your business.

To be part of the course, businesses need to be registered and operational within the Western Cape; have a valid tax clearance certificate or be in the process of registering for tax.

Business owners are required to fill in an online application form at http://tr.im/uwcsmme or a PDF form at http://www.navosys.co.za/PDF_AppForm2-DayBusinessStrategyCourseUWC. pdf.
