A passion for horses and community spirit has given rise to the newly established Darling Equestrian Club, a non-profit initiative committed to making equestrian sports accessible to everyone in the Darling and the West Coast region regardless of background or experience.
The club held its inaugural event on Saturday (24 May) to promote rider safety, giving local riders vital skills required to handle and ride their horses safely. The event was supported by the Wellington Pony Club, which contri-
buted by sharing their knowledge with local riders and utilising their community-building skills including a braai, learning sessions, and a rider awards ceremony.
Key contributors to the success of the day included Mande Siderfin-Swart and her team Zahndre Burger, Jonathan Wearne, Skye Krige, and Sean Herron who traveled from Wellington to Darling to share their expertise and lend a helping hand. Local riders were thrilled to receive rosettes and certificates of completion, proudly sponsored by Greening Up Nursery, The Herron Family, and Rushfords Rosettes. Fundraising sponsors included Spar Darling and 72 On Tap.
Founded by a group of dedicated locals, the club is the brainchild of Caroline Herron (chair), Tanya Menhinick (vice chair), Jodie Green (treasurer), and Kirsten MCrystal (company secretary). These directors bring a wealth of experience and a shared vision to ensure the smooth running of the club and the fulfillment of its mission. Adding to her responsibilities, Menhinick also serves as chair of the West Coast Region of the Western Cape Equestrian Federation, further strengthening ties between the club and regional equestrian authorities.
The club, officially registered as a non-profit company, operates under a comprehensive Memorandum of Incorporation, which outlines goals such as promoting equestrian sports, offering training and resources to budding riders, and hosting events that unite the community. Chairperson Caroline Herron added that plans are underway to establish a 60 m x 40 m full-size dressage arena and a grass arena, much-needed facilities that will enable the hosting of local competitions and events across multiple equestrian disciplines. Fundraising efforts are in full gallop, with the club calling on individuals and businesses to bring their skills and resources.
The club has its first official patrons: JF Kirsten Vervoer and Cape Country Properties.
The Darling Sports Club also extended its support, along with the community and families who helped make the event a memorable success.
