Parents looking to enrol their little ones for the 2020 school year can start applying this month.
Enrolment in the province is from Friday 15 February until Friday 15 March.
According to the Western Cape Education Departement (WCED) learner numbers in the Western Cape have increased, with 18 285 learners in 2019, compared to the previous year. Of these, 16 285 come from other provinces. Over the last five years the majority of new learners came from the Eastern Cape.
The WCED agrees new schools are needed to accommodate this growth in learner numbers – around 15 – and more than 480 new educators are needed to meet their needs.
Currently there are still approximately 5 700 learners who still haven’t been placed for the school year. In light of this, the department encourages parents to apply for the 2020 school year as soon as possible.
Parents will be notified of the outcome on Friday 7 June. Confirmation of children taking a spot at a school or not will have to be given by a parent by Friday 12 July.
The compulsory school going age is 7 years, the year that the child is supposed to be in Grade 1. Admission to Grade R is 6 years, the year they are expected to be at that level.
When going to register your child remember to take along their:
. Birth certificate.
. Immunisation card.
. A transfer card/letter.
. Last school report card for learners who have been to school.
. A study permit issued by Home Affairs for foreign learners.
. A child may be registered provisionally if these documents are not available. The parent must be given a reasonable time to submit them.
