The first person has tested positive for the Covid-19 virus in the Saldanha Bay Municipal area. This is the second person in the broader West Coast District, as a Swartlander was confirmed as being positive yesterday (Monday, 30 March).
The latest Provincial statistics was released by Premier Alan Winde, just after 16:00 this afternoon. The Western Cape now has 348 positive cases of Covid-19. The Premier added, there are currently 13 people in hospital with three patients being treated in ICU.
“We can also confirm today that 50 people who previously tested positive for Covid-19 in the Cape Metro, have fully recovered from their symptoms. All of them completed their 14 day period of self-isolation, and can now, in accordance with guidelines set out by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, leave isolation,” Winde said.
Executive Mayor Marius Koen said in a statement, he is waiting on a more detailed update as he has not received any other details regarding the patient.
“I really
want to plead with all residents to please stay indoors, continue practicing
social distancing and hand washing during this period and to not be arrogant
about the seriousness of this virus. Saldanha
Bay Municipality urges communities to take heed of the lockdown measures and to
act responsibly to contain and prevent the further spread of COVID-19 within
the municipal area,” Koen said.
Leensie Lötter, a spokesperson for the Western Cape Department of Health: West Coast Region, told Weslander information regarding the patient is limited at this point. “The person was tested privately and not at one of our facilities,” she said.
