Selected to take part in the World Reining Championship is a big achievement and opportunity for Jordan Wright du Plessis (21).

This resident from Saldanha has been selected to represent the United States of America’s team and will also compete individually.

According to Jordan, the opportunity to compete in the USA team came as a complete shock to her.

“When I was made aware of the World Reining Championship, I had no intention to qualify and compete since I have work and competitions scheduled this year already.

“I was approached while in the USA by team manager Katie Schroader about the opportunity, and with all the facts given it would have been crazy to say no.”

Competing for the USA team allows Jordan to ride in the team competition and show in the individual championships on her horse.

“When I first accepted the offer, I was torn as I felt I was abandoning my country by representing the USA. After finding out that I would still compete as a South African in the individual competition, it sealed my decision.

“I’m extremely excited to hold my name and country high in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

This event will be taking place in Givrins, Switzerland, between Monday 7 and Saturday 12 July.

Jordan’s love for equestrian sport started when in primary school. Her mother took her for her first try riding lesson, and although scared, she quickly got over it and has not stopped riding since.

Jordan has a passion for horse riding.

One of her biggest highlights is no other than the World Reining Championship, “but every win or title she holds has some sentimental value and memories attached to it, each win no matter if it was in South Africa or the USA is a testament to how much work I put in and a measure of whether or not I am meeting my goal of constant improvement or not.”

Her most recent win was the Yellowstone Rookie Shootout at the National Reining Breeders Classic held in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Heading to the championship, Jordan looks forward to showing with her horse, named Alpha Taris Chic (nicknamed Bay), which she’s had since 2023.

“He is my American ride and stays with my trainer and coach, Gunny Mathison, who cares for him, rides him, and occasionally competes on him in the months that I am not there. “This opportunity allows me to add another competition to my roster with Bay.

“He’s a fun and challenging horse to ride; if I had to compare him to a car, he’s got the talent and capability of a McLaren or Ferrari.

“I learn a lot every time I show with him, and he makes me a better jockey.”

Her mother and manager, Yvonne Wright, says her heart bursts with pride as she has witnessed the way Jordan has grown.

“It is her hard work and work ethic, something that her father and I are both proud of. This opportunity is just a combination of all the work and hours she has put in,” said Yvonne.

Jordan is excited and will not only be keeping her country’s name high but that of the West Coast as well.
