Despite the challenges life has thrown at him Bokamosa Manyokole, better known as Boka, never lets it get him down.
The Grade 7 learner from Topolino Private School in Langebaan made his community and school proud when he was selected for the Boland Shiraz hockey team. Recently the team participated in the South Regional Tournament and won bronze, an overall third place.
Being selected for the team was a surprise as participation in the sport felt somewhat accidental, but a great testament to how Boka had committed himself fully and the great talent he has been blessed with.
The Manyokole family does not have much, yet their father, Stephen, tries his utmost for his family. One may recognise him as one of the friendly petrol attendants at Total garage in Langebaan.
Eugenia Paulo-Goagoses, a close friend of the family, admires Boka’s dedication and hard work. “He sadly lost his mother to cancer a week before Christmas in 2021. The children were devastated, Stephen even more so, what with such young children and losing his life partner. Though his family insisted they help with the children, Stephen was determined to take care of them himself and see that they realise the goals and dreams he and his wife had set out together. This family has crept into the hearts of many and have had great help each step of the way.”
Opening their hearts the Topolino family came together and helped finance Boka’s Boland Shiraz journey. Sharing with Weslander, he said he was very grateful to everyone who assisted. “I want to thank them because they all helped and supported me. You’re all angels and lifesavers; I love you all.
“It was an honour to know I was selected for the Boland Shiraz team. The news felt electrifying, and I felt as if I had achieved something big and great in my life. Although bronze is not first place it still means a lot for my first tournament and how close we were to winning. This encourages me to come back stronger and better.”
His father said he is very proud of Boka and his achievements so far.
“We went through a lot as a family, and had a very important loss in our lives, which affected all of us, but we never gave up and kept going. What motivates me is my children, who mean everything to me and I love them. They’re first in this world. I would do anything for them.
Manyokole’s dream is to see his children succeed and have a good life. “I look forward to them surprising me again and making me proud.”
