The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), a national agency of the South African government, in February posted on Facebook about a false claim doing the rounds, saying parents can apply for R1 100 for six months.

This message, which is again being spread on WhatsApp and other social media platforms, is false and does not come from Sassa.

Readers are strongly advised not to click on the link to the website in the message, as it leads to a free content management site that asks for personal information like name, email address and phone number.

The message being sent around on social media such as Facebook and WhatsApp reads: “Due to high level of complaints from South African parents on the high cost of feeding their children, *President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa* have [sic] urge that the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation [sic] to open the CHILD SUPPORT scheme. Every South African parents is entitled to receive the sum of *R1,100* for 6 months.

Are You A Mother or Father in South Africa Apply Now For Government Of South Africa *R1,100* CHILD SUPPORT Cash Transfer

*APPLY NOW *”

There is no “minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation” in South Africa.

The message urges readers to “share with other parents” to “let them all benefit from the child support”.

The message and its link are a scam. Apply for a child-support grant by visiting the office in Vredenburg or visit the official Sassa website (sassa.gov.za) for more information.
