Ruan Smith, former professional rugby player and one half of the well-known Smith twins, is the new bachelor on kykNET’s popular reality series Op my eish!

Officially retired from professional rugby now, he saw his participation in the show as a chance to find love in a new way. “My previous relationships didn’t work out, and this opportunity is perfect for stepping out of my comfort zone and trying a different approach.”

After finishing school, he joined Western Province and later played for teams such as the Brumbies, Toyota Verblitz in Japan, the Queensland Reds and the Melbourne Rebels. In 2022, he returned to SA and played for the Lions.

He now lives in Alberton, where he and JP run their rugby clinic, Eight7. Through this project they identify and develop young rugby talent, with a special focus on local and underserved communities.

Ruan, who was previously married and is a father of two, is now deeply committed to family, faith, and building meaningful relationships. After everything life threw at him, he was ready to give love another chance.

When he’s not busy with rugby or community work, he enjoys simple pleasures like having a braai, beach holidays, playing golf and working out. He describes his ideal partner as loyal, honest, low-maintenance, and not materialistic. Ambition is a key trait for him.

With his signature sense of humour, he laughs as he encourages women to apply: “Just make sure you know the difference between me and JP. And just say I’m the good-looking brother – even if you don’t really think so. What do you have to lose?”
