The Department of Basic Education has released the amended school calender for 2021.

The school year has been delayed once again due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The school year will consist out of 192 school days and starts on Monday 15 February.

The first term will be from Monday 15 February to Friday 23 April, second term from Wednesday 3 May to Friday 9 July, third term from Monday 27 July to Friday 1 October and the fourth term from Monday 11 October to Wednesday 15 December.

Bronagh Hammond spokesperson for the Western Cape education department says that all grades are set to return on the first day of school. “However, schools may implement revised timetables and some grades may attend on alternating days. It is dependent on the size of the school and the learners they can accommodate.” She says that schools need to adhere to the health and safety regulations. “This will then inform the timetable based on accommodation.”

Hammond adds that currently 178 Covid-19 cases among teachers have been reported and 6 are currently active.
